As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God.  Psalm 42:1

Advent is a time of gathering together with friends and family and many times sharing a meal. It is also a time when many of us eat so much food that we just cannot eat another bite. We may eat so much at times that we think we will never eat again. Our physical hunger is totally satisfied. But it is not the same with spiritual hunger!

I was raised in a Roman Catholic home and although we attended church each Sunday and functions at the church during the week, we never read the Bible at home. So at the age of 20-something I had never really just sat down with a Bible and read. I was then working as a restaurant manager. I went to clean a table. There I found a small miniature booklet, provided by The Gideons International, on the table. It was the New Testament with Psalms and Proverbs: You know, the little brown ones you see sometimes. The person who left it was long gone so I took it back to the office to keep it safe. I glanced in it to find a name or phone number to call and there was a name but no phone number. I started to read the Gospel of Matthew while standing in the office. Well, I could not put the Scripture down; I read it continuously for days and weeks. Every time I had a few minutes I was running back to the office and reading Scripture. I had an uncontrollable desire to know God through the Scripture.

Unlike being physically full of food and needing to stop, spiritual hunger is never quite satisfied. Just as the deer pants for water, we thirst for God’s Word: we want to know God through his Word. I keep that little Bible on my desk as a reminder that there are many people in the world that we pass by everyday who do not know God or have not experienced his Word.

Prayer: Father God, help us to stay hungry, not for the things of this world, but for your eternal Word. Help us to have that intense desire to know you and to share your Word and your love with those around us. Amen.
