Every man shall give as he is able, according to the blessing of the LORD your God

which he has given you. Deuteronomy 16:17

Growing up my father’s favorite activity over the Christmas season was to give each of us ten dollars and we would scour the mall to find gifts for the entire family with that money. It was a fun time of really thinking about each individual and what they enjoyed, being frugal with our dollars and of course not being caught with our purchases.

My father did not grow up with a lot as a child. Not a lot of presents under the tree on Christmas. Not a lot of love in a household. It was so important to him to give his family everything that he could, even when times were lean. His love for us was given freely, not held back. Gifts of service to his friends and family is always his gift throughout the entire year.

Our ten dollar Christmas is still one that we enjoy when together over the holidays. This year there will be 9 to buy for, so there might be the potential to move up to a twenty dollar Christmas. We are in negotiations with Dad on this aspect. The important thing to him is that we really think of each person as who they are in your life, not just wants. My father keeps this gift-giving heart throughout the year and through this experience teaches us to have a giving heart.

Prayer: Father God, Thank you for the amazing gift of your son Jesus Christ. Help me to remember through the season that Christmas is about loving others and putting that love into the experience of gift giving, not the gift. Amen.
