Lenten Devotional-Day 8

Wednesday, February 25

Genesis 1:1-2 In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters.

When God Mixes with Us

The world’s steepest cogwheel train carried us 6982 feet to the top of Mount Pilatus in Switzerland.  The sky was blue; the sun was shining; and we were filled with joy remembering the previous day’s visit with our Joho relatives. The view, the beauty of God’s creation was breathtaking.  Clouds were nestled beneath the snow-covered mountains in the distance.  Below were grass-covered slopes and hiking trails for those who ascended on foot.

This was a view I wanted to remember. I lifted my camera and began to take pictures.  Suddenly a bird flew into my shot. I was sure that my ruined picture would be filled with bird feathers. When I looked at the results, however, the bird was frozen in flight in the top right of the picture seeming to survey the beauty of the mountain. It reminded me of the creation story in Genesis when the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.

This bird made a good picture great and I had nothing to do with it. It was a gift from God. I was simply prepared. My camera was charged and ready with the correct settings.

How many times does God take the gifts we have been given and skills we have developed to accomplish something much greater than we can do on our own? In our care-giving ministries I have experienced God meeting the needs of the care receiver much more completely than my abilities would explain. We may be using the gift of listening or being given the words that someone needs to hear. It is much more than us.  It is God working through us, that hovering Spirit within us. God is with us all the time.

Remember the song:

Great things happen when God mixes with us

Great things happen when God mixes with us

Great and beautiful wonderful things

Great things happen when God mixes with us.

Prayer: Remember the times that God worked through your gifts and skills to help others. Remember the times of challenge or pain when God made something beautiful out of a difficult situation. Pray that you will be prepared, open, and aware to follow God’s call upon your life. Thank God for the great things that happened and will happen because of God’s presence in your life.
