ADVENT READING

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Philippians 4:13

All of us have to face difficult times in our lives. Loss can come in many forms. Changes in life style by moving to a new community or having a child grow up and out of the home, while a normal part of life’s routine, may be painful adjustments.

For some of us the issue may be poor health. For others it might be broken relationships, relationships that seem to be irreparable. For still others it is dealing with the permanent loss of a family member or close friend through death. At such times it is difficult to maintain hope.

Like everyone else, I, too, have faced some times of transition and loss. This verse has helped me through some of the toughest moments of my life. I think that some trouble we bring on ourselves. Some pain is brought into our lives by other people. And sometimes trouble just happens. Whatever the cause, I believe that our troubled times can be used by God.

For growth and healing to occur, we must allow God to work through us and in us in the midst of our troubled times, whatever the cause. We may not like what is happening to us, but it is only through God that healing will happen. The greater the hurt, the greater the healing.

Prayer: Gracious Father, I am grateful for the gentle and loving way you are putting your finger on the obstacles in my life. Give me the attitude that puts your will first and my will second. Amen.
