Faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. Hebrews 11:1

Throughout my life I received countless gifts from my Mom, Marion Hathaway… my first Bible, white leather with Jesus’ words in red; a blue hand knit sweater for no reason other than her love for me; a sweet smelling bar of soap; a pair of earrings and countless other treasures. The most priceless gifts she gave were ones that could not be purchased…uncontrollable laughter over something silly, a knowing glance between us, or the deep abiding love we had for each other. Most importantly she shared the gift of her faith and trust in God.

Through a small scrap of paper found after her death in May, once again she was able to bestow upon her family and friends her absolute certainty of God, her Father’s, presence in her life. She wrote:

When I was a child, I would stand on our front porch waiting for my father to come home from work. As soon as I saw him, I would leap off the porch and run to him for a hug. Now the time has come when once again I have “leaped off the porch” and run to my FATHER’S open arms. I will see the rest of my family, Dad, Mother, Aunt Olive, my sister Edith, and all the other Saints that I have known in my lifetime. God has blessed me just as He will bless you. All my love, Mom

It was no coincidence for me to have found her note. It is proof of God’s love for us as witnessed by my Mom. I know how much comfort I was given by her warm, gentle, strong arms enveloping me. How infinitely greater is the comfort she received running to her FATHER in heaven’s open arms. Through God’s gift of his only Son, Jesus Christ, each and every one of us can receive this promised gift of life everlasting, when it is our turn to “leap off the porch” into our Father’s arms.

Prayer: Thank you, God for the gift of my sweet strong Mom. May her unshakable faith continue to uplift me and others. Thank you, God, for the gift of baby Jesus so many Christmases ago. Amen.
